The Garbage King by Elizabeth Lair
My passage is on page 216 and 217.
“Liar, liar pants on fire.”
The passage in the book I am questioning about is: Why did Getachew steal in the first place when he knew he could have gotten kicked out of the gang? I think he stole the cigarettes because he did not have enough money to pay, let alone he had almost no money at all.Later in the book Shoes who is a character, told Mamo who is also a character that this was not the first time that Getachew had stolen and that Getachew had stolen more often and the juvenile Million did not know about it. The gang definitely helped because they all became friends. They were almost like a little family helping each other out. Why didn’t Shoes tell Million? Was it because he got kicked out for tattle telling too?! It might be because of that but stealing is bad and that should be a lesson Getachew should have learned from the get go. The lesson or one of the lessons this book is telling you is: Do not steal or lie to people because someone will always find out.
I am also connecting to how you almost always lie because it is a natural instinct for some so they do not get in trouble. Try not to let this happen because in the end you will feel guilty or regret it and somebody will find out . If you do not feel any of those things you probably did not lie and that is a good thing or you feel ashamed and feel like you should tell the truth and that is kind of good but not excellent. “Liar, liar pants on fire” and you probably do not want to hear that because it is not fun getting teased but it sure is a good lesson. Try not to lie like Getachew.
I chose this passage because it is one of the many lessons in this book. I have also noticed that all the lit circle books have a similar theme which is survival and perseverance. It is good to be tough and keep trying. Like In this book Mamo never gave up on trying to escape the mean farmer. That is an example. You should never give up and find a way out. Like a “Tough nut to crack” is a saying for perseverance. Mamo sure was tough throughout the book. I highly recommend reading this book!!!
